Night Light is a three minute animated short film concept, with 2D hand drawn animation and some 3D elements, taken from an idea first envisioned during a week of work experience at Curveball Media.
'In a world where underwater monsters are kept at bay by the power of a bright light house, a timid little boy with a fear of the dark wakes up in his boat to discover that the light has gone out. With the help of his friendly teddy bear, he has to find the courage within himself to race across the waters and turn the light back on before the monsters rise from the depths'

Night Light is a short film concept about a boy with a fear of the dark. It was a story I came created during a week or work experience that I later developed while employed at the company.
I took the idea from my own experiences trying to sleep in the dark as a child. A little boy likes to sleep with his window curtains open, because a bright orange streetlamp stands beyond the back garden and lights up his bedroom. When someone closes his curtains, he fights his nightmares to open them back up again.

The monsters are based on creatures from Japanese folklore known as the 'Umibōzu', shadowy humanoid creatures who rise from calm ocean waters and destroy ships.
This is the old version of the storyboard (below) and animatic (left), before the designs for Koji (the little boy) and the monsters where properly established.
